“The Worst Witch” is based on the hugely popular children’s fictional works by Jill Murphy. Series was produced by CBBC Productions in collaboration with ZDF, ZDF Enterprises and Netflix as an extravagant fusion of real life and CGI. The central character in “The Worst Witch” is ten-year-old Mildred Hubble, an ordinary girl who discovers she has the abilities of a witch. Despite her best intentions, she blunders from one disaster to the next because of her defining feature – clumsiness. Mildred is by far the worst student at Miss Cackle’s Academy for Witches, but still she never gives up. Thanks to her friends and to her cat, Tabby, she never loses her sense of humor and usually manages to resolve even the most hopeless of situations. The tumultuous exploits of the budding witch humorously exemplify the principle that “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try and try again” (39 x 28’, a third season is in production).

An unusual science documentary, “The Divided Brain” explores one of the most audacious and controversial scientific theories of our time: is there an imbalance in our brain hemispheres that is affecting how we deal with large problems in our society? Unlike old pop-psychology beliefs, we now understand that both hemispheres are involved in most functions. However, the way they perceive reality is very different. The left hemisphere has given us science, literacy, and technology, while it cannot feel empathy for others or connect with nature. But neuroscientist and psychiatrist Dr Iain McGilchrist argues that, over centuries, the values of the left hemisphere have slowly been gaining influence in society. Acclaimed British actor John Cleese, known from Monty Python, is one of the contributors and a big supporter of the documentary. “The Divided Brain” takes the viewer on a mind-altering journey to explore evidence of McGilchrist’s radical idea. It may be the film one half of your brain doesn’t want you to see (50’ or 80’).

Part of the PBS documentary series POV,” “On Her Shoulders” tells the story of Nadia Murad. After surviving the 2014 genocide of the Yazidis in Northern Iraq and escaping sexual slavery at the hands of ISIS, the 23-year-old Nadia Murad gave a testimony before the U.N. Security Council that was heard around the world. Nadia suddenly became the face of the Yazidis – a historically persecuted and voiceless religious minority. A moving study of the dizzying path Nadia’s life takes – from the refugee camps of Greece to soul-bearing media interviews, emotionally draining speeches in front of the U.N. and an endless succession of one-on-one meetings with top government officials – the film exposes the disparity between the toll the work takes on Nadia and her resolve. Away from the podium and chaos, there are glimpses of Nadia as she once was – a strong-willed girl who dreamed of opening a beauty salon in her village. As this resilient young woman navigates bureaucracy, politics and the cost of fame, the film deftly reveals the immense obstacles facing a vulnerable minority struggling to be heard. With a formal precision and elegance that matches Nadia’s calm and steely demeanor, filmmaker Alexandria Bombach brings us inside an exhausting, destabilizing journey fraught with personal pain and profound ethical urgency (60’).
